Uznany za Najlepszego Projektanta Roku 1996. W tym samym roku został głównym projektantem domu mody Givenchy. W 2001 zrezygnował z posady w Givenchy i rozpoczął pracę u Gucciego. W 2001 przeniósł się do Paryża. McQueen był zdeklarowanym homoseksualistą, w roku 2000 poślubił swego partnera George`a Forsytha, twórcę filmów dokumentalnych.Dnia 11 lutego 2010 roku został znaleziony martwy w swoim londyńskim apartamencie.
